The seller doesn't know what he's talking about. Those aren't A5's and they don't sell for $6000 a pair. If they're loaded with 421s, I think the asking price is about what the components are worth on ebay....... the majority of the money is in the HF horns/drivers.
Plus....... Old Guy, I think you've made a mistake too...... isn't the Tolex covered 816, the 816C? There is a VIX or VI, but I don't think there is a V.

Yeah, you're right about the seller. I saw the $6000 price tag he mentioned and I've noticed that price in other listings for various VOTTs the past few years. That's because when Sparkomatic was making A7's (doubt they sold BARELY any) they were charging something like $6000 each IIRC. So now, sellers would like to think their speakers are worth $6000 new ;p
I agree, obviously depending on what they're loaded with it's either a good or great deal (if mint 416's for example it's a great deal--although expecting that would be very optimistic!)....

If you value the 816's at 100, the 421's at 100, and the horns at 300, it's a good deal. It would need subs. Note I added nothing for the crossovers.
It's late 70's may be tangerine drivers.

If they're loaded with the drivers and crossovers shown in AB's link they're a very good deal IMHO. 808-8B tangerines and 1209-8A crossovers (with h.f. compensation and separate mid and treble controls).
Just an afterthought, if someone wanted to make these at least a little more "hi-fi friendly" (I know that's not what they're designed for) how do you think they'd sound if you swapped out the Symbiotik frams for some new GPA aluminum frams (and maybe sold the 421's and kicked in some cash to buy 416's)? Come to think of it, can GPA recone 421's to 416's?

They may still need a sub if you're really bass hungry, but they'd probably sound pretty good. The 515 may be a better speaker for the 816 cabinet, Though......... just guessing since that's what the Engine is based on. I have no idea if the 416 was offered, or not, in the 816 cabinet.
Swapping the diaphragm in the 808's is a typical recommendation for HiFi use.
